Khachkar Dedicated to the 25th Anniversary of Armenia's Independence Erected in Tokyo

On September 16, the Embassy of the Republic of Armenia in Japan organized the ribbon-cutting ceremony for the "Friendship Khachkar" stone monument in Shiroyama Garden, a park in downtown Tokyo. The monument is dedicated to the 25th anniversary of Armenia's independence and to the 24th anniversary of establishing diplomatic relations between Armenia and Japan, and symbolizes the friendly between the peoples of Armenia and Japan.

Representatives of the Japanese National Diet, the Foreign Ministry, the Armenian Community in Japan, and other guests attended the ceremony.

Dr. Grant Pogosyan, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Armenia to Japan, delivered an opening speech explaining the symbolism of the monument. He stressed the significance of this dedication which serve a token of friendship between our two nations with continuously deepening and expanding relations in the past 24 years.

Mrs. Mika Mori, representative of Mori Trust Company Ltd., who co-sponsored the project, also delivered a speech, followed by Mr. Seishiro Eto, President of the Japan-Armenia Friendship League in the Japanese National Diet who also addressed the audience. Mr. Eto expressed fulfilment from the recent developments between our countries, particularly stressing the benefits of his delegation’s recent trip to Armenia. The visit and the opening of this monument demonstrate tangible steps towards building deeper relations between Armenia and Japan.

This monument which is made of an Armenian basalt stone in Armenia (designed by S. Barseghyan), is the second Armenian khachkar in Japan. The first one - "Peace Khachkar" was erected in Tokyo a year ago – in the centennial year of the Armenian Genocide.
