Armenian Culture Week was launched in Tokyo

19 May, 2015

On May 19, Armenia Culture Week was launched in the exhibition halls of Daikanyama Hillside Terrace, Tokyo, dedicated to the Centennial of the Armenian Genocide. The event was organized by the Embassy of Armenia in Japan with the support of the Japanese Committee for Coordinating Armenian Genocide Centennial Events.

At the opening ceremony, Ambassador Pogosyan greeted the guests, introducing the events scheduled during the Culture Week.  Ambassador stated that this project aims at raising awareness about Armenian history, culture and art in Japan. He expressed his contentment that with such presentations of the Armenian culture by both Armenians and Japanese artists, researchers demonstrate the ties and existing convergence between Armenian and Japanese cultures.

During the Culture Week the works of Armenian and Japanese contemporary artists were exhibited in one of the galleries. Another hall was showing the photographs of Prof. S. Sasano (Tokyo Institute of Technology) and Prof. H. Mohri (Waseda University) with titles “Armenian Christian Architecture” and “Visiting Armenian Churches around the World.” The next hall displayed the works of Dr. K. Nagaoka, Prof. Emeritus in Kyoto Seika University, who for several past years has been reproducing the images of the Armenian Cross-stones in Armenia using the Japanese Taku-hon method. Dozen of paintings of Armenian children were also displayed at the main hall, which also exhibited the front pages of the international press publications during the Genocide years showing the world’s reaction about the atrocities. The display included several remarks of Japanese printed materials with author biographies as well.

Several lectures by Japanese specialists about the Armenian Genocide, the traditions of the Armenian architecture and tourism were also held during the Armenia Culture Week.
