Komitas Quartet’s Japan Tour

A concert tour of the Komitas State String Quartet was held in Japan from November 29 to December 10, 2014. The Japan tour of the renowned quartet was organized by the Armenian Embassy to Japan and the Japan-Eurasia Association in cooperation with the Ministry of Culture of Armenia, and was dedicated to the 90th anniversary of the quartet’s creation.

The first concert was performed in the Chapel of the International Christian University (ICU) of Tokyo. The evening started with the Armenian and orthodox chants performed jointly by the ICU Old Glee Club and the Orthodox choirs, which performed in Armenian for the first time. Besides the concerts in Tokyo the quartet also performed in Osaka, Nagoya, Musashino and Tokorozawa. On December 9, the Japanese pianist Takahiro Akiba joined the quartet’s final concert. Together, they performed the compositions of Komitas, Aram Khachaturian and Edward Mirzoyan. Besides the general public, the concerts were attended by diplomats, representatives of the Japanese government, cultural and educational organizations and media. The quartet received a warm welcome from the audiences during the concert tour.
