Political Consultations between the Ministries of Foreign Affairs of Japan and Armenia

On January 15, a series of political consultations took place in Tokyo between the Ministries of Foreign Affairs of Armenia and Japan. Mr. Sergey Manassarian, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Armenia represented the Armenian side, was from the Japanese side the consultations were ran by Ambassador Norio Maruyama, Japanese Foreign Ministry’s special representative for the Caucasus, Deputy Director of the Bureau of European Affairs.

The parties discussed several subjects that were on the agenda, especially the start of political dialogue, trade agreements, economic relations, and international cooperation. They also discussed expansion of legal framework and cooperation in cultural and educational capacities.

Both parties emphasized the significance of the Japanese government’s decision made on December 24 last year to open a Japanese embassy in Yerevan. The parties mentioned that the residential embassy would be a contributing factor in reinforcing the political dialogue between the two countries. They also stressed the importance of reaching an agreement, which would allow diplomatic passport holders from both countries to visit the other without a visa.

The parties also exchanged views on several international and regional issues.
